- “"Oh Ed"”
- ―Bev Bighead
Beverly "Bev" Bighead (mostly known as Mrs. Bighead by Rocko) is the main fictional character of Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life franchise. Mrs. Bighead is an anthropomorphic cane toad,[2] lives next door to the main character of the show, Rocko, whom she welcomes to her home recently.
She is the wife of Ed Bighead, the mother of Rachel Bighead, and the next-door neighbor to Rocko. Bev is a lot more level-headed than her husband, and is usually the one who manages to calm Ed down when he is having a fit. She is quite resourceful and frisky.
Overall[]
Bev Bighead is a female character of the series. She is a Harvey Fierstein-esque raspy-voiced cane toad and Ed's wife. Bev assumes authority in the Bighead household. Unlike her husband, she enjoys the company of Rocko, Heffer and Filburt. She is a party animal who enjoys cooking and sunbathing nude. There is evidence that she sees Rocko as more than a neighbor and wants to have an affair with him and she has tried to seduce Rocko on more than one occasion, resulting in Rocko seeing her naked numerous times. She also is a possible masochist—she sleeps on sharp objects and has been impaled in the back with a lawn dart by Rocko, but was unaffected by it. At one point, she took over Ed's job at Conglom-O for a week when Ed took a leave of absence due to a nervous breakdown and ran the company very well. Her favorite bedroom pastime with Ed is to make him crack plates in mid-air with his tongue like clay pigeons.
Bev is also an incredibly compassionate toad, having taken Earl the vicious dog in when she forces him into a submissive posture for digging out their yard, she falls in love with him and likewise, which is strange for Earl. Earl and Ed then vie against one another for Bev's attention and approval, which Ed ultimately loses due to his underhandedness. Fortunately, Earl is gone in subsequent episodes and his adoption is for the most part retconned through the rest of the series.
Appearance[]
Bev has orange hair, blue lips and green skin, the latter two just like her husband, Ed. Mrs. Bighead is mostly green. She has orange hair and white eyes with black pupils. She wears a pink shirt, a pearl necklace, and blue pants and white high heels.
In Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, she has a more prominent bustline and rear end. (She even confides to Virginia Wolfe that she got "a little work done", implying she had breast implants and a butt lift.)
Personality[]
Bev "wears the pants" in the family; she demonstrates a loud, domineering manner and she keeps her husband Ed in line. Despite all these personality traits, though, she has shown that she loves her husband very much. Beneath her ugly exterior and grating voice, she is a closet party animal (even going so far as to spy on her neighbors when Heffer threw a nudist party in Rocko's backyard). Unlike her husband, Bev is much more kind and friendly, and actually likes Rocko, Heffer, Filburt, and Spunky. Bev has invited Rocko to her house on some occasions. In the "Leap Frogs" episode she tries and fails to seduce Rocko, but by the episode's end Rocko is somewhat responsible for rekindling the romance in the Bigheads' relationship. Bev eventually adopts Earl in Frog's Best Friend.
Behind the scenes[]
Early development[]
Joe Murray said that he based the Bigheads off of a group of neighbors who lived next door to Murray during his childhood. Murray described the neighbors as grumpy. The general concept involving characters with large heads originated from a comic, written by Murray, named "Rizzo the Art Director."
Voice[]
Bev is voiced by Charlie Adler, who also voices her husband Ed. Her voice is very raspy and is based on that of Harvey Fierstein.
