Dora the Explorer is an American children's multimedia franchise created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes and Eric Weiner that premiered on Nickelodeon on August 14, 2000. The series is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
Series' plots[]
Dora the Explorer (Pilot)[]
The 15-minute pilot centers around Dora Marquez and Boots finding their way to the beach. It is the official debut of Dora, Boots Backpack (her purple-colored talking backpack), Map (her talking map), Swiper the thievish fox, Benito The strong and appetitive blue-colored bull, Tico (originally known as Tico the Skunk) the dark purple friendly squirrel, and the Lifeguard (who is now known as Val the Octopus). The pilot was later remade into the episode "Beaches."
Dora the Explorer (main tv series)[]
The series centers around Dora Marquez, a seven-year-old Latina girl, with a love of embarking on quests related to an activity that she wants to partake of or a place that she wants to go to, accompanied by her talking purple backpack and anthropomorphic monkey companion named Boots (named for his beloved pair of red boots). Each episode is based around a series of cyclical events that occur along the way during Dora's travels, along with obstacles that she and Boots are forced to overcome or puzzles that they have to solve (with "assistance" from the viewing audience) relating to riddles, the Spanish language, or counting. Common rituals may involve Dora's encounters with Swiper, a bipedal, anthropomorphic masked thieving fox whose theft of the possessions of others must be prevented through fourth wall-breaking interaction with the viewer. To stop Swiper, Dora must say "Swiper no swiping" three times. However, on occasions where Swiper steals the belongings of other people, the viewer is presented with the challenge of helping Boots and Dora locate the stolen items. Another obstacle involves encounters with another one of the program's antagonists; the "Grumpy Old Troll" dwelling beneath a bridge that Dora and Boots must cross, who challenges them with a riddle that needs to be solved with the viewer's help before permitting them to pass. Known for the constant breaking of the fourth-wall depicted in every episode, the audience is usually presented to two primary landmarks that must be passed before Dora can reach her destination, normally being challenged with games or puzzles along the way. The episode always ends with Dora successfully reaching the locale, singing the "We Did It!" song with Boots in triumph.
On numerous occasions, television specials have been aired for the series in which the usual events of regular episodes are altered, threatened, or replaced. Usually said specials will present Dora with a bigger, more whimsical adventure than usual or with a magical task that must be fulfilled, or perhaps even offer a series of different adventures for Boots and Dora to travel through. They might be presented with an unusual, difficult task (such as assisting Swiper in his attempts to be erased from Santa Claus's Naughty List) that normally is not featured in average episodes, or challenge Dora with a goal that must be achieved (such as the emancipation of a trapped mermaid). Sometimes, the specials have involved the debut of new characters, such as the birth of Dora's superpowered twin baby siblings and the introduction of the enchanted anthropomorphic stars that accompany Dora on many of her quests.
Go, Diego, Go![]
The show features eight-year-old Diego (voiced by Jake T. Austin, seasons 1–3; Matt Hunter, season 4; Brandon Zambrano, season 5) who rescues animals around the world. His cousin is Dora (Kathleen Herles) from Dora the Explorer, as revealed in multiple shows, usually without Boots by her side. Diego was first introduced in an episode of Dora the Explorer entitled "Meet Diego!" (originally voiced by brothers Andres and Felipe Dieppa). Diego has a jaguar companion named Baby Jaguar (voiced by Thomas Sharkey) who assists him in rescuing the animals. Baby Jaguar also appears in Dora the Explorer along with Diego, but inconsistently; on Go, Diego, Go! he takes on a more active role, and is able to speak.
Diego's older sister, Alicia (voiced by Constanza Sperakis, Seasons 1–2; Serena Kerrigan, Season 3; Gabriela Aisenberg, Seasons 4–5), is a computer whiz and also bilingual, she directs the animal rescue calls that come into the center. She also assists Diego in helping the animals they love. Alicia is responsible and kindhearted and always kind to her little brother.
Diego's parents are described as animal scientists; they appear in several episodes, but their names are never given. There is also one other older sister, Daisy, voiced by Iliana Friedson-Trujillo (which makes Alicia a middle child), who only appears in "The Bobo's Mother's Day!" with Diego stating that she is home from college. Daisy celebrated her 15th birthday in "Dora the Explorer" Season 4, Episode 2 "Daisy, La Quinceañera," which aired on October 1, 2004. Diego states that Daisy is home from college in "Go, Diego, Go!" Season 3, Episode 4 "The Bobo's Mother's Day," which aired on May 9, 2008. That would make Daisy 18. Daisy appears in three "Dora the Explorer" episodes: "Dora Saves the Game," as a cameo in "Dora's Pirate Adventure," and "Daisy, La Quinceanera." This makes Diego the youngest child and the only son to his parents.
In most episodes, Diego hears an animal's moan for help at his rainforest Animal Rescue Center. With help from his friends, gadgets, and viewers at home, he sets out to save and help the animal.
Other characters include Click (voiced by Rosie Perez), a camera that locates the animal calling for help; Rescue Pack (voiced by Keeler Sandhaus), a messenger bag Diego wears that can transform into any object; and two troublesome spider monkeys named the Bobo Brothers (voiced by Jose Zelaya), who can be stopped by shouting "Freeze, Bobos!" and Diego often encourages viewers to help him stop them by shouting it. While they might be compared to Swiper from Dora, they really don't cause trouble for Diego on purpose and they apologize after doing so.
There are a few recurring animal friends that are normally rescued by Diego in their first appearance but appear later to return the favor and help Diego out. The most common of these is Linda the Llama (voiced by Laura Abreu), who has appeared prominently in four episodes and made a cameo appearance in "Three Little Condors." Just like Dora the Explorer, the show teaches preschool-age children the Spanish language. However, the show takes a lesser approach to this and focuses more on the teaching of various animals.
Kelly Ripa, and her son, Michael Consuelos both guest star as Mommy Maned Wolf and her Pup.
In each episode of Go, Diego, Go! there are several songs and uses of Spanish vocabulary.
Whenever a carnivorous predator (such as anacondas) is featured on the show, its diet is not mentioned, unlike when herbivores are shown (such as marmosets). Notable exceptions to this are when an octopus helping Diego is explicitly shown and discussed eating live crabs, when a baby river dolphin who had tickled Diego eats the crabs heading toward a waterfall; when Tuga (Sea Turtle) eats jellyfish and when Jorge (little Hawk) eats grasshoppers, however, these prey are not anthropomorphised in the same way that other creatures typically are in the series. Whenever a featured animal is threatened with being eaten by a predator, the prey is described as being "afraid" of the predator. Diego's diet is also not mentioned, however, in at least one episode it is suggested that he is not a vegetarian an issue as the majority of animals in the series are portrayed as anthropomorphic.
Dora and Friends: Into the City![]
Dora, who is now a 10-year-old girl, attends school and lives in the city of Playa Verde, California. She has five friends: Kate (who loves art), Emma (who loves music), Alana (who loves sports and animals), Naiya (who is smart and enjoys reading), and Pablo (who enjoys playing soccer). Together, Dora and her friends work together and go on adventures while discovering the secrets of their city. Dora has a magical charm bracelet that helps her get through objects in the way and a smartphone, complete with an app version of the previous series' map to aid her.
The characters are all bilingual and speak Spanish in addition to English. However, the Spanish curriculum on Dora and Friends has been expanded to using simple phrases and commands as opposed to solely the single Spanish words used on Dora the Explorer.
Season two features the return of characters from the original series such as Boots, Benny the Bull, Isa the Iguana, Tico the Squirrel, Swiper the Fox, and Big Red Chicken who appear as guest stars in certain episodes such as the reunion special "Return to the Rainforest", which involves Dora's return to the rainforest in Mexico to rescue Map and Backpack after they are swiped from Boots by Swiper, only to be carried off by a strong wind. At the end of that episode, Backpack is repaired and redesigned by Kate after Backpack is torn apart by a cliff on Tall Mountain. The special also introduces a young flower named Bud who lives in Isa's garden and had heard all about Dora's adventures from her. Bud ends up getting sewed up as part Backpack by Kate, though he is perfectly fine with it as he gets to go on adventures with Dora and her friends. Bud helps Backpack find and retrieve objects stored inside her for Dora.
In addition to Backpack and Bud, Map returns later in the season following the events of "Return to the Rainforest", effectively replacing Dora's map app. In "For the Birds", older versions of Diego, Alicia, Baby Jaguar (who now goes by just "Jaguar"), and the Bobo Brothers from Go, Diego, Go! appear as well. The series had a few guest stars such as Megan Hilty and Christina Milian.
