Family Ties is an American comedy sitcom franchise created by Gary David Goldberg for the CBS Entertainment Group. The franchise started in the early 1980's with the live-action comedy sitcom based on the series itself starring Michael J. Fox, Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter.

The plot of the franchise[]

Family Ties (television series)[]

Set in suburban Columbus, Ohio during the Reagan administration, the show depicts Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter) as baby boomers, liberals and former hippies, raising their three children: ambitious, would-be millionaire entrepreneur Alex; fashion-conscious, gossipy Mallory; and tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers). Married in 1964, Elyse is an independent architect and Steven, a native of Buffalo, New York, is the station manager of WKS, a local public television station.

Family Ties Vacation[]

The Keatons take a vacation to England where Alex takes classes at Oxford University, having won a summer scholarship. While Alex struggles with fitting in and Mallory falls for his dormitory roommate William Clive-Hopkins, the family gets mixed up in international intrigue.

Family Ties: The Art of Being Nick[]

The set of this plot is more focused on the environmental artist, Nick Moore, who appeared as Mallory's boyfriend in Family Ties.

Day by Day (Family Ties)[]

The plot centers on Brian and Kate Harper, a married couple with two successful careers (Brian as a stockbroker, Kate as a lawyer) and a teenage son named Ross. After the couple had a second child, their daughter, Emily, they decided to quit their jobs because they had missed all the best times of Ross growing up and decided not to make the same mistake with Emily.

Most of the franchise's plot took place in Columbus, Ohio (USA) where the Keaton family live and tell their stories. the show debuted on Comcast's NBC main channel for a seven-season run on September 22, 1982 but cancelled and concluded on May 14, 1989.

Film[]

The television film Family Ties Vacation aired two nights before the start of season four. The movie was later split into four individual episodes when the series entered syndication. The plot of the tv film starts when the The Keatons take a vacation to England where Alex takes classes at Oxford University, having won a summer scholarship.

Nick Moore's on-screen debut[]

This is an American sitcom pilot and the Family Ties spinoff created by Bruce Helford, that aired on NBC as a special on August 27, 1987. The Art of Being Nick aired on August 27, 1987. It pleads more on the environmental artist, Nick Moore and his backstory. [1] Despite garnering solid ratings, NBC didn't pick the series up reportedly due to the network's reluctance to lose the popular Nick Moore character from Family Ties. [2]

Spinoff[]

The Family Ties television series spinoff Day by Day makes the show centers on Brian and Kate Harper, a married couple with two successful careers (Brian as a stockbroker, Kate as a lawyer) and a teenage son named Ross. Day by Day was connected to it's sister series, Family Ties. The family patriarch, Brian Harper (played by Sheehan) was a college roommate of Steven Keaton (Michael Gross).
