Garfield is a multimedia franchise created by Jim Davis. It stars a lazy orange cat named Garfield, his oddball owner Jon Arbuckle, Jon's dopey dog Odie, and their various friends along the way.
On August 6, 2019, Nickelodeon's parent company (ViacomCBS) announced that it had acquired the rights to the franchise through a buyout of Paws, Inc.[1] Nickelodeon would produce a new animated series starring the character.[1]
From 1997 to 2000, syndicated reruns of Garfield's first television series, Garfield and Friends aired on Nickelodeon. As a result of ViacomCBS's acquisition of the franchise, Garfield and Friends received its own channel on the Pluto TV service on September 7, 2021.

The franchise itself created the twelve half-hour long American animated television specials based on the Garfield comic strip of the same name created by Jim Davis. All twelve specials were directed by Phil Roman, written by Davis, and featuring the voice of Lorenzo Music as the character. The specials were originally broadcast on CBS from 1982 to 1991. Although the first two specials were produced by Lee Mendelson Films, this boutique studio was fully committed to the production of the Peanuts animated specials and could not allocate resources for the Garfield specials. All of the remaining Garfield specials were produced by Roman's production company Film Roman.[2]
The Reception of all the animated specials received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Animated Program, winning four by 1989, which includes Garfield on the Town (1983), Garfield in the Rough (1984), Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985), and Garfield's Babes and Bullets (1989).

- Main article: Paws, Inc.
Paws, Inc.[3] was founded in 1981 by Jim Davis to support the Garfield comic strip and its licensing. It is located in Muncie, Indiana (USA), and has a staff of nearly 50 artists and licensing administrators. In 1994, the company purchased all rights to the Garfield comic strips from 1978 to 1993 from United Feature Syndicate. However, the original black and white daily strips and original color Sunday strips remain copyrighted to United Feature Syndicate. The full color daily strips and recolored Sunday strips are copyrighted to Paws as they are considered a different product. Though rights to the strip remain with Paws, Inc., it is currently distributed by Universal Press Syndicate. In August 2019, Davis sold Paws, Inc. to Viacom, who has placed Garfield under the Nickelodeon banner.[4]
Notes[]
- While Liz Wilson herself does not appear in Garfield's Pet Force, an alternate version of her from another universe known as "Vetvix" serves as the main antagonist. Vetix is heavily based on Liz Wilson, right down to her design as well as her name being a reference to Liz's occupation as veterinarian.
- Despite owning the franchise, past Garfield adaptations (such as Garfield and Friends, the television specials [which is owned by 9 Story Media Group], the live-action movies, the direct-to-video movies [both which are owned by The Walt Disney Company following their acquisition of 20th Century Fox], The Garfield Show [which is owned by Dargaud], and the upcoming animated movie [which will be distributed by Sony Pictures], to name a few) are not owned by ViacomCBS.
