Jason Gideon is one of the main characters in Criminal Minds for seasons one and two. At the end of season two, Gideon retired from his job due to emotional issues and unable to deal with the death of his girlfriend, Sarah Jacobs who was killed by Frank Breitkopf. In season three, he was replaced by David Rossi. In season ten, it was revealed that he was murdered.
Appearance[]
Jason Gideon is a caucasian man with short black hair and brown eyes. He tends to dress up casually, most of the time he is seen wearing collared shirts and jeans. On some occasions, he'll wear his glasses. He is so smart.
Personality[]
Gideon is a highly skilled agent as he was taught by Max Ryan. He has strong leadership and remains quite calm in his cases. He pays close attention to the surrounding environment, visual or auditory. Gideon deeply cares about his co-workers especially Spencer Reid since he is so young. He is even mentioned to be the father figure to him.
However, it is clear that Gideon suffers from mental health problems: he suffers from PTSD, is blameworthy, and has trouble letting go of the past. This and the murder of his girlfriend hammered Gideon to the point that he left abruptly from the group. Rossi replaced Gideon in episode two of season 3. Before his departure, he left a note that was aimed specifically for Reid.

- Jason Gideon's actor, Mandy Patinkin stated the reason why he left Criminal Minds because the show was "very destructive to his soul."
- "I never thought they were going to kill and rape these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my personality, and after that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."
- His character is heavily inspired by John E. Douglas, a real-life special agent of the FBI. He is also an author, who wrote books about criminal psychology.
