MTV Classic (formerly known as VH1 Smooth, Classic Rock, and Classic) is a television network owned by ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks. In 1998, MTV Classic was known as VH1 Smooth which features smooth jazz, new age (a genre created for relaxation, meditation, and yoga), and adult contemporary music. It only lasted for one year.
In 1999, the programming shifted to rock music dating back in the 1960s through 1980s. In 2000, it was renamed to "classic rock" while keeping the VH1 brand. VH1 Classic Rock lasted until 2016. In 2016, Viacom announced that in celebration of MTV's 35th anniversary, the channel was renamed to MTV Classic
MTV Classic will usually air videos from 1980 to 2009 but sometimes 70's and 2010's videos air on certain blocks. Notable 70's videos include "Roxanne" by The Police and "Babe" by STYX. Notable 2010's videos include "Girl Gone Wild" by Madonna and "Stone" by Alice in Chains.
The newest video to air is "Girl on the Billboard" by Brian Setzer, released in 2023.
