Save the Last Dance is a teen dance film duology franchise made and created by Duane Adler (the creator of Lionsgate's Step Up franchise) only for the MTV Entertainment Group. The franchise starts when Sara Johnson and Derek Reynolds, a teenage interracial couple in Chicago who work together to help Sara train for a Juilliard School dance audition. after the first film's ending, This continues the story of Sara Johnson recalling how she was born to be a dancer, but her mother would often comment that she knew how to pirouette before she could properly walk.
The franchise started in 2001 with the film but ended on the film's sequel in 2006.

Most of the series' storyline, character and film location settings are all in the film. In the first film. The Production team gave Julia Stiles that landed the role as Sara when director Thomas Carter saw her dance scene in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. The film's music was composed by Mark Isham, but the film's soundtrack was released on December 19, 2000, through Hollywood Records and consisted of hip hop and R&B music that was mostly seen in the film.
Save the Last Dance 2[]

A sequel to the film, titled Save the Last Dance 2, was released direct-to-video on October 10, 2006. Unlike the first film, Save the Last Dance 2 has it's own unique way how the franchise goes by it's own rules. Like R&B singer Ne-Yo who makes an appearance in the film. The sequel's reception had Christopher Null of the Filmcritic.com was critical of the film, stating it "retreads the original Dance pretty much completely".
20th Anniversary[]

on Jan 13, 2021, The Buzzfeed staff mentioned about the franchise's 20th Anniversary along the way, The film itself instantly became a cult classic, exploring themes of race and class that are still relevant today.
Short-lived reunion[]
The stars of the first film decided to hang out online after 20 years of co-starring together has really made the franchise itself even closer to them. A blockbuster news came out in Jan 17, 2021, Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas has revealed that they are open to the idea of doing a sequel to Save the Last Dance, maybe a third title called Save the last Dance 3". But this Year, it was never announced throughout the time being.
