The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for SquarePants (also known internationally as The SpongeBob Movie 4) is a 2025 Upcoming American live-action/computer-animated adventure comedy film based on the animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. The film is also the sequel to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which is the third film of the SpongeBob film series. In this movie, SpongeBob goes to the deepest depths of the ocean where he will face off against the Flying Dutchman.

On February 15, 2022, a fourth theatrical SpongeBob SquarePants film was officially confirmed to be in development in February 2022 right after the announcement during Paramount's Investor Event.[6] In April 2023, during Paramount Pictures' CinemaCon panel, it was announced that the film would be titled The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, with series veteran Derek Drymon set to direct the film. On April 17, 2023, it was announced that Reel FX Animation would be animating the film.[7] On April 27, 2023, the title and plot were revealed at Cinemacon 2023. A first look at the film was also revealed during Paramount Pictures' panel.[8] [9][10] In April 2024, it was reported that the show's regular voice cast of Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence Matt Barry would reprise their roles.[11] Pam Brady and Lisa Stewart would serve as producers.[12] At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Mark Hamill announced that he would play the Flying Dutchman, replacing Brian Doyle-Murray, who had provided the character's voice in the series.[13][14]It is set to release on May 23, 2025.[15][16][1]

In August 2021, Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins, mentioned that "there's a new SpongeBob [film] in the works".[17] A fourth film was officially confirmed in February 2022, with a targeted theatrical release of the film.[18][19] On November 10, 2022, it was announced that the film will release in theaters on May 23, 2025.[20] On April 27, 2023, during Paramount Pictures' CinemaCon panel, it was announced that the film would be titled The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, with longtime series writer Derek Drymon directing the film. Touted as "the series' biggest film yet", it will follow SpongeBob as he travels to the depths of the ocean and faces off against the ghost of the Flying Dutchman.[21]
Release[]
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is scheduled for theatrical release on December 19, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.[22][23] It was previously scheduled for May 23, 2025,[24] but was pushed back to December 19, 2025, with the untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film taking the May 2025 slot due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[25]
